The Nerd Herd

2017 Virtual Race Series FAQ

What is the Nerd Herd Racing Series?
The Nerd Herd Racing Series is a trilogy of virtual races put on by yours truly – the Nerd Herd. Each year, our races have a beloved theme that corresponds to something one, some or all of us get really nerdy about..

How does a virtual race work?
Registered runners complete the race distance over a one-week time period. Do it all at once (that’s what she said) or spread it over a few days, it’s all up to you. You can complete your miles in any manner you prefer – walk around the block, run on the treadmill, skip down your local trail with friends. The Nerd Herd believes in the honor system, so we won’t be sending race officials to your area to make sure you followed any rules. Just get out there and have some fun and get busy moving (that’s what she said)!

Why should I do a virtual race?
There are a million reasons to do a virtual race, but here are our favorites: 1) We really like medals. 2) A virtual race is much easier to fit into our busy schedules than other races. 3) We are feeling lazy and could use a little extra motivation to get off the couch. 4) Our friends will join us for a run or walk if we give them some extra incentive. 5) We want to support a great cause.

How far do I have to run, walk, or skip to complete each race?
5k = 3.1 miles
10k = 6.2 miles
Half Marathon = 13.1 miles (Except for the ELEVEN miler – we really hope you know why that’s so cool.)

I want to do the entire series, but I don’t think I can do an entire half marathon. Is there another option?
Yes! We understand that a half marathon can be pretty intimidating. Because we want everyone to be able to complete the Nerds Run the World Challenge, we’ve decided to include a 5k as an option for all three races.

Is there swag?
Yes! Fantastic medals were designed just for the Nerds Run the World Challenge. They’re pretty cool, if we do say so. But since it takes a few weeks to get the custom medals produced, you will only be guaranteed a medal if you register at least one week before the race dates. You will also get an official race bib. Race bibs will be emailed to participants before the race period begins. You don’t have to wear the bib when you run, but we’d love it if you did. It would be even better if you take photos and share them with us on our Facebook page. And if you sign up for all three races in Nerds Run the World Challenge, you will get an extra medal!

Will there be awards?
Yes! But because this is a virtual race and we use the honor system, they won’t be given to the fastest people. Instead, we offer fun awards for things like Best Nerdy Costume. Stay tuned for more information about how to be eligible for awards!

Can my child participate?
Yes! We love Nerdlets and want to encourage their development of a fun, healthy and nerdy way of life in any way possible. They’ll get all the same swag as the adults, and we might even throw in a little something extra to encourage nerdy behavior.

How do I register?
You can click here to register on for the full trilogy or you can click here for the first race in the series. Click here to register for only Race 2 (individual race 3 registration link will be available at a later date.) We do not offer paper registration.

How much does it cost?
Each race registration costs $25 ($35 for International). Participants can sign up to complete all three races for $70 ($95 for International).

Where does my registration fee go?
Your registration fee will be used to pay for some great swag, including cost of participant medals and shipping as well as registration site costs. The rest of your registration fee will go to support Stupid Cancer. We will be posting a fee breakdown for 2017, but in the meantime please reference the 2016 fee breakdown here.

Stupid Cancer is a non-profit organization that empowers young adults affected by cancer through innovative and award-winning programs and services. They are the nation’s largest support community for this under-served population and serve as a bullhorn for the young adult cancer movement. Their charter is to ensure that no one goes unaware of the age-appropriate support resources they are entitled to so they can get busy living. In our first four years of working with them, we raised approximately $85,000 to give them. In our fifth year – this year! – we would like to reach $100,000. We can only do this with the help of nerds like you!!

Are my race fees tax deductible?
No.  Nerd Herd Running, LLC is NOT a charitable organization.  We are simply a group of friends working in support of a non-profit organization.  Once all of the race costs are taken care of we write a check for what’s left to Stupid Cancer.

What if I want to make a donation in addition to my race fees?
You have two options (thats what she said). You can write a check made to Stupid Cancer and mail it to Nerd Herd Running, PO Box 327, Savoy IL 61874 for delivery OR you can make a credit card donation via our page (which will be active shortly).

How will I know how much Nerd Herd Running has donated to Stupid Cancer?
We will post financial statements to our website for total transparency.

Who is Peter Quill’s (AKA Star-Lord’s) father?
We’d tell you if we knew.

I have more questions. Where can I get the answers?
You can contact us, ask on the Nerd Herd Racing Series Facebook page or Tweet Us. We’ll do our best to answer all questions that you might have.
