The Nerd Awakens 5k Awards and Results

Posted on

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… 735 nerds joined together for The Nerd Awakens 5k.  This was the first race in our 2015 virtual race series, The Nerdly Hallows Trilogy.   They came from planets large and small (Texas and Connecticut) and near and far (Canada and Switzerland).  In fact, we had representatives from 47 states as well as 8 different countries!

We asked each nerd to select their favorite Star Wars movie during registration so that we could include an awesome quote on their bib.  A whopping 40% loved watching Han and the gang escape from the clutches of Jabba the Hut on Tatooine and team up with the ewoks to defeat the Empire in Return of the Jedi.  Another 32% loved seeing Luke learn about his true parentage and hearing Admiral Ackbar tell the rebel forces that “it’s a trap” during the Empire Strikes Back.  19% of the nerds preferred being introduced to the light and dark side of the force and seeing the death star destroyed in the original Star Wars (aka Episode IV: A New Hope).  We are ridiculously proud that only 6% of all of our nerds chose either The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, or Revenge of the Sith as their favorite Star Wars movie.  You give us hope for the future generations of nerds!

Since we want to encourages nerds of all athletic abilities to join us for our races, we don’t reward the fastest people with trophies or plaques.  Instead, we come up with race categories that will reward creativity and fun.  The award categories for the Nerd Awakens were: Best Costume, Best Homemade Light Saber, and Best Photo of you Sleeping in your Race Clothes.  To be eligible for a prize, you had to post a photo to the Nerd Awakens 5k facebook event page with a visible race number so that we could verify your registration.  We were very sad to eliminate a few nerds who had awesome costumes but forgot to follow all the rules.  Nerd Herd Running searched through all of the facebook posts, giggled at some of the awesome entries, debated which entries were the best, and finally picked our favorites for each category.  Each of our winners will get an awesome Star Wars themed prize in the mail.

The winner for Best Costume goes to Jennifer Little of South Carolina.  An ewok with a matching cupcake!  How can you not love that!

The winner for Best Homemade Light Saber is April Padgett of Tennessee.  She made a light saber out of cake!  Next time, we might require you to send us a sample so that we can eat it too!

We decided to give out a bonus award for the Nerd Awakens 5k.  Marc Schreiber of Oklahoma went above and beyond and took his X Wing pilot suit to Star Wars weekend at Walt Disney World.  He got ears up photos with five our favorite characters and they’re awesome!

Both me, Red Six(Jek Porkins) and my shattered X-wing fighter are humbled by the recognition afforded me. After I explained the reason for the ears-up request they were eager to oblige me. Thank you for the opportunity to join in the fight against cancer. Now, will there be a reason to get ears up while in my King Fergus cosplay get-up?
